In an effort to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 among student-athletes and athletics personnel (including coaches, equipment managers, etc.), as student-athletes return to campus to participate in individual workouts, group/team activities, and team competitions; the Navajo Technical University Athletics Department has established the following re-entry plan for intercollegiate athletics: Athletic Department Re-Entry Plan

NTU Wellness Center is very concerned with the health, safety and well-being of the students and staff. For this reason the wellness center will reopen with limited usage. The center is following the guidelines of the CDC- Center for Disease Control and Prevention, New Mexico Health Department, ACHA – American College Health Association, and the Navajo Nation Executive Orders:

How do students become eligible to participate in a sport at NTU?

Students wishing to participate must be in good academic standing at NTU and must have a Cumulative GPA of 2.5, be currently enrolled at NTU with a minimum of 12 credit hours, and identify a major in a certificate or degree program at NTU unless they are identified as a Non-degree seeking major.

How do I try out for a team at NTU?

Future Skyhawks can contact NTU Athletic Director George LaFrance at 505.786.4311 or email him at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

If I make a team, what kind of time commitment am I looking at?

NTU sports teams maintain their own practice schedules that will be determined by the head coaches of each team. Typically each practice runs for two hours. Attendance and participation at practices during the academic year are mandatory. In case of an emergency or impending tardiness, student athletes are responsible for notifying their coach.

All Navajo Technical University athletic travel to and from competitions will be provided via minibus, van, car, and occasionally by air. Any overnight trip will result in an overnight stay at a hotel with teams and NTU athletic coaches.

Are there any athletic scholarships offered at NTU?

Yes! Athletic scholarships, grants-in-aid, and special inducements or privileges for athletes do exist at NTU. The current year FAFSA form is required to be submitted to NTU financial aid office. NTU scholarships are based on financial base needs.

I am a transfer student, can I participate in sports at NTU?

Yes! Transfer students are welcome to join any NTU athletic team. A second semester student must pass 12 credit hours and must have a Cumulative GPR of 2.5 or higher is his/her proceeding term. A student transferring with 24 credit hours of more must have a Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher during the last two proceeding terms of attendance from prior institutions.

What are NTU’s academic policies with student athletes?

Student athletes must submit a NTU Class Release Form if a student wants to be excused from his/her class. Students are responsible for material covered in class as well as class assignments, projects, and tests. Student athletes must maintain regular attendance in each course. The end of the semester grades determine eligibility. Midterm and random grade checks are in place to monitor student athletes grades and academic participation. The NTU athletics department expects their athletes to perform well in competitions as well as in the classroom.

What happens if I become ineligible to play a sport?

In order to become ineligible for a sport at NTU a student must have not passed 12-24 credit hours and or their Cumulative GPA fell below a 2.5. Student athletes will not be eligible to play for that next semester and will be automatically placed on academic probation. Students will be assigned to a counselor with the Student Services and required to set a learning contract and meet with their counselor regularly. Students will not be able to participate in intercollegiate athletics until the student returns to Good Academic Standing.

As a student athlete, where can I go to get help in school?

Free tutoring services are available throughout NTU campus at either the STEM Lab in Module 11 and or the Creative Writing Center in Module 13. NTU encourages all students to take advantage of these services.

NTU teams have goals to place in their conference, regional, and national championships in a variety of sports. Winning teams have become a tradition at NTU in both men’s and women’s sports.
